The Returned shows subtitles can make it in the mainstream

TV review: The love that is flowing for The Returned (C4) surely kicks into touch the idea that subtitled dramas only attract a niche audience.

Yes, the trail has been blazed by The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen, but they were tucked away on BBC4. Full credit to C4 for trusting that the quality of The Returned could play to a primetime audience: it’s a gamble that’s paying off handsomely.

The Returned unpeels its secrets like a bashful artichoke, so it’s tough to talk about it without falling into the spoiler trap. (French for spoiler: Le spoiler.)

But the opening scene of last night’s episode was an eye-opener, giving us a glimpse of the tautly strung Dr Julie in her former life as a feeling feline party animal.

The man who pulled the strings on Wisteria Lane, along with co-executive producer Eva Longoria, have truly crafted the perfect summer mystery drama — as bitingly funny as it is dangerously addictive.

I’m sure you all know about the hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for the Veronica Mars Movie, but maybe you have never watched Veronica Mars.. and have no idea what all the fuss is about? Well, I’m going to do my best to tell you! It’s one of those shows that was mishandled by it’s network (the marketing is shocking, they clearly didn’t know what to do with it).. and cancelled after three seasons with a hugely unsatisfying ending. I would probably have never seen it if E4 hadn’t aired it in the UK around 2009 (I think.. I’m pretty sure I was unemployed after University and thus about to watch it every day at 2pm!).. and I don’t believe they ever bothered to advertise it being on, and like I say it was a mid afternoon slot. After one episode I was hooked.. and I’ve never looked back.
